It's many years since a young woman was put off a train for a void ticket and no money, and was raped while walking along the track. But I've just seen summonses issued.)

L.P Imprisonment is not going to happen.  Line 15 of Conditions of Use on the jacket of your pass spells out the penalties for improper use of a pass.  If you can not produce a matching passport your are fined $100, must buy a full-fare ticket and the pass is confiscated.  Another item to keep in mind when using a pass is:  Line 9 and line 15 states that you must enter the date of travel on the pass before boarding the train and if you don't the conductor can fine you $50 and make you buy a full-fare ticket for the journey. I have often been asked by the conductor to show my passport for matching to my pass.  This is common on EC trains, Thalys and TVG trains.  Keep in mind also that on overnight trains crossing country borders passengers occupying a sleeping car are asked to turn their passports over to the conductor for checking by border guards and are returned in the morning.  This too provides the opportunity to get caught with a passport not matching a pass. When we were traveling on a family Eurailpass it got compared to our passports at least every time we crossed a frontier on the train.
