Good Friday Morning,
There's only 351 shopping days until Christmas so you'd best get busy.
It's barely 27 degrees here at the Asylum this morning and it promises
not to get any warmer today. In fact, this could be the high for the
next several days! Winter: You love and you hate it.
County Legislator Vinnie Tamagna has been appointed to
chair the County Legislature this year.
With the nation plunging into poverty and stays in homeless
shelters up, food stamp outlays reaching historic proportions and
food and clothing banks running out of goods, it might come as a
surprise that two major national retail chains, H&M and WalMart
are destroying unsold clothing rather than donating them where
they're most needed.
What if airlines were run like the current US health care
system? Watch this
video to find out!
The gulf stream, that vast cyclone of water that brings warm,
tropical waters north towards the British Isle's and gives England it's
unusually moderate climate has taken a vacation plunging England
into a winter they've haven't seen in
thirty years and blanketing the entirety of that nation under snow.
Temperatures as low as -8F are predicted in many places for the
overnight hours tonight and in Scotland the government warns that as
many as one million sheep may perish from the cold.
Photographer Andrew Cichowski was stopped and held by
San Jose, CA police recently for photographing a barbed wire fence
at a train station. Police demanded his camera card, student ID, social
security number and then photographed him even after they had admitted
he had done nothing wrong. Apparently, once again, the police have not
gotten the memo that we live in the United States where such things are
not illegal.
I got my 2010 Chuckie Goodnight calendar in the mail on
Wednesday and my life is now complete!
Who is Chuckie
Goodnight you are asking? Well, this is from their website:
The Chuckie Goodnight Foundation for the
Environment strives to create a better Earth for all. We think
every
day should be Earth Day because everyone benefits from supporting
environmental health! With the help of our spokesman, Chuckie
Goodnight, we educate children and families about the importance of
protecting the Earth.
What's more, the CGF has its home right here in
Putnam County. Check out their
website! And help them along. Educating the next generation is of
paramount importance.
If you're looking for an easy to listen to internet _base_d radio station
I can't recommend Whole Wheat Radio enough. WWR is _base_d in
Talkeetna, Alaska and broadcasts folk/blues/jazz twenty-four hours a
day and seven days a week. Point your browser here
to listen or here to check it
out.
If you have a child and are looking for
a sleep-away camp experience for the coming summer you need to look no
further than right here in Putnam County. The Eden Village Camp is
starting their first season on Dennytown Road, just below Fahnestock
State Park. They are a non-profit Jewish environmental overnight camp
for 3rd – 12th graders, located on 248 beautiful acres touching the
Appalachian Trail. Their co-ed, community supports each camper in
developing leadership skills, exploring new interests and awakening a
sense of purpose and joy. Eden Village Camp adds an innovative
earth-_base_d program to the best of traditional camp. The experience
includes organic farming and food, wilderness trips, cooperative
natural building and service projects, art and music, working towards a
zero-waste goal, Jewish _expression_ and traditional camp activities. Check them out.

We need more of these signs around:
From: SmartCode Central
The SmartCode is a model transect-_base_d development
code available for all scales of planning, from the region to the
community to the block and building. The code is intended for local
calibration to your town or neighborhood. As a form-_base_d code, the
SmartCode keeps towns compact and rural lands open, while reforming the
destructive sprawl-producing patterns of separated use zoning.
SmartCode Central collects all the important components of
transect-_base_d planning in one place. We provide files of the latest
versions of the model SmartCode and supplementary Modules, including
new sustainability standards. We also _link_ to calibrators, attorneys,
and town planners who do significant work with the SmartCode.

If you're looking for a place to go cross country skiing this
weekend, you need not look any further than DEP's Lockwood Unit
which is accessible from Dixon Road just south of the
Kent/Carmel line. While the entrance-way may be a little broken up and
rough, once you reach the top of the rise you've got a couple miles of
relatively level old country roads to navigate, a pretty lake and 5
stone chambers to check out. See the Lockwood
page at the Outdoor
Recreation Guide. If you stay on the main road it's 3 miles out and
back.
I've got that lousy head cold that's running around lately. I'm
going back to bed. Enjoy your weekend!
Tonight:
Environmental Impacts on the Antarctic Ecosystem
7:00 p.m. Environmental Impacts on the Antarctic
Ecosystem. Join Dr. William H. Schlesinger, president of the Cary
Institute, for a photo-rich Antarctica travelogue. Drawing on several
of his journeys, Schlesinger’s lecture will explore how climate change
and pollution threaten this remote region, which supports penguins,
seals, and fragile marine-_base_d ecosystems. Despite being the coldest
continent on the planet, distant human activities are contributing to
melting ice caps and a growing ozone hole. This event will be held in
our auditorium, located at 2801 Sharon Turnpike (Route 44) in
Millbrook, New York. Events are free and open to the public.
